A significant manufacturing zone located on the outskirts of the capital is dealing with radioactive contamination following an official taskforce found traces of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing plants within the site, which includes businesses shipping chilled marine products.

This discovery has triggered emergency cleanup operations and the moving of nearby residents, following a comparable pollution scare in the United States that was linked to the Jakarta facilities.

An important multinational retailer is one of the companies that have withdrawn products from its shelves following the discovery.

Investigation and Discovery of Pollution

Indonesian officials initiated an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a consignment of chilled breaded shrimp sent by a local firm.

Officials issued an warning instructing distributors and retailers to dispose of the product and not sell it, although the detected level was well under the authority's intervention threshold. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an acute hazard to consumers.

The FDA explained: “The main impact on health of concern following extended, ongoing small amount exposure (eg through consumption of polluted products or liquid over a period) is an increased risk of cancer, caused by damage to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Health Checks

Radioactivity tests showed at least twenty-two plants in the industrial area were contaminated. The Indonesian taskforce did not name the twenty-one other production facilities, but said they would promptly receive cleanup processes conducted by the country's atomic energy agency.

The environment minister stated that residents living in highly contaminated zones would be moved until the location was decontaminated, emphasizing that the well-being of the residents was the “main concern”.

Health officials also conducted checks on nearby workers and people located close to the manufacturing estate, finding 9 people who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. They were referred to a medical facility before being allowed to return home.
