The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
