New Year's Celebrants Urged to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Forecast Throughout the UK
Forecasters have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Proceed Amid Warnings
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the Met Office.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and good visibility. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, meaning warm wraps vital, said forecasters.
To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Travelers have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.
Temperatures Expected to Drop Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Warnings Released
In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this indicated the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This involves a expected uptick in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
