Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Fire So Long As England's Star Sets Aside His Ego at the Door.

A single omission did the trick. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is extremely shrewd not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy demands contributions by the talented midfielder, although it is also Bellingham's responsibility to fit into the tactical structures and player rankings required with the national team now that he is back in Tuchel's welcoming fold.

The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his fire, but it is a matter of using it appropriately. Personal talent is important but England have learned the hard way that there is a cost when fame dominates. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.

Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the recent team selection. He watched the national side secure their spot at the tournament without him. He watched the young talent shine as a counterpressing No 10. He listened as the coach talk about loving the group’s energy and principles. Naturally, he has reacted in winning fashion, netting important strikes for Real Madrid versus their rivals and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.

The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham focused on frightening rivals instead of teammates. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has demonstrated that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after showing that he is unafraid to drop big names.

“There is no problem with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel stated. “Jude just has the edge. You need that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he reached. Everyone need to support him and build a setting which he can [have] his drive towards opponents and towards the goals we are building as a team.”

The star dominated most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming final group games against one opponent and the other. Any other news? Well, how about another talent? Here is a further gifted No 10 who needs love and guidance. He has not played for England since March and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but the boss was impressed by the 25-year-old after his display in his club's victory against the German side recently.

The issue, however, is how to use the various creators at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to pick another youngster once he is fit after a fitness issue. Is selecting five No 10s to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager never found the right blend at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the team, restricting Harry Kane’s influence as a result.

It is hard to see the current manager doing similar if it harms the attacking balance. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles helps. He is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be through the middle. The coach wants him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘We want you in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this fantasy about him for years. In my view it matches his abilities best.”

Tuchel conceded there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.

“I think he is additionally so used to representing Man City in a certain structure, with a defined role. Believe he benefits greatly from clarity. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

The manager discussed Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and the other netting strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for Manchester City at left-back. Interest is high.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

At the same time, it is additionally a moment to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up Kane to score in a friendly win against the Scots in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other once during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.

“This is where at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to speak frankly. There is still a sense of the player having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires Bellingham committed but he will be observing him carefully. Set aside self-importance at the door. It will make a powerful England team into an even better one.
